Notes

Xiquexique is a replacement name for Pilosocereus subg. Gounellea Zappi, which has been shown as a lineage distantly related to Pilosocereus s.str. by molecular and morphological characters (Lavor et al. 2017, 2019; Romeiro-Brito et al. 2023).A,B,C

Distribution (Area)

Southern America:, Brazil Northeast (Alagoas native, Bahia native, Ceará native, Maranhao native, Paraíba native, Pernambuco native, Piauí native, Rio Grande do Norte native, Sergipe native); Brazil Southeast (Minas Gerais native)

Distribution (General)

It is endemic to Brazil. Widely distributed in the Northeast of Brazil, typical element of the Caatinga ecoregion (X. gounellei, in seasonally dry tropical forest, SDTF), but also reaching adjacent ecoregions (e.g., X. frewenii in the Espinhaço Range).D,E

Systematics

Recent studies based on hundred of nuclear loci derived from target-enrichment and a comprehensive sampling of subtribe Cereineae have recovered Xiquexique as a sister lineage of Micranthocereus s.str. (Romeiro-Brito et al. 2023).C

Taxon standing

Category A: The genus is monophyletic based on a complete or very comprehensive phylogenetic study, and a phylogeny-based taxonomic synopsis was published.B
