Welcome to caryophyllales.org

This is an information source about the angiosperm order Caryophyllales. Here, you can explore the latest taxonomic treatments, find the currently accepted names and synonyms, citations of phylogenetic literature, and much more.

Our foundational work, the genus-level checklist (Hernandez et al. 2015), forms the cornerstone of the information on this website. We are currently working towards a species-level synopsis, with several families being treated at the species-level already. All treatments are constantly updated as new taxonomic or phylogenetic research is published.

Background & Tools

New digital tools and online resources for plant taxonomy have been developed in recent years and have created exciting possibilities for advancing plant systematics research. We utilize one of these tools, namely the EDIT Platform for Cybertaxonomy (cybertaxonomy.org) to integrate traditional monographic work with modern phylogenetic and evolutionary studies, bridging the gap between these two approaches. As outlined by Borsch et al. (2015), this will serve towards a more integrated and holistic understanding of Caryophyllales diversity and towards an appreciation of the full spectrum of taxonomic research within the scientific community.

The Caryophyllales Network

The Caryophyllales Network is built on collaboration between institutions and a network of individual researchers studying Caryophyllales families or genera. The Instituto de Biología UNAM (México), the Instituto Darwinion (Argentina), and the Botanic Garden & Botanical Museum Berlin (Germany) are key partners and ensure the sustainability of this initiative.

Our primary objective is to consolidate knowledge about Caryophyllales, including taxonomic treatments, phylogenies, and biogeographical information, into a comprehensive global synthesis, which is openly accessible through this Internet portal.

Additionally, the Caryophyllales network serves as a Taxonomic Expert Network (TEN) for World Flora Online (worldfloraonline.org).
