Larridon & al. (2015) have conducted the first molecular phylogenetic study of Copiapoa, using sequences from the three plastid DNA markers rpl32-trnL, trnH-psbA, and ycf1. They have additionally modeled the species distributions based on geo-referenced localities and climatic data and analysed the evolution of selected morphological characters. Copiapoa was maximally supported as monophyletic. The subclades that were resolved and received good statistical support did not fit to previously suggested subgeneric classifications, therefore the authors have provided a new subgeneric classification with four sections and two subsections based on their results. The data also allowed to define 32 species and 5 subspecies, though not all relations between the species could be resolved. The recovered relationships were often supported by morphological characters and distribution patterns.

Taxon standing

Category B. The genus is monophyletic based on phylogenetic studies that support the clade based on a sufficiently dense or even complete sampling, or support a monotypic genus as a distinct lineage, but do not provide a new taxonomic treatment at the species level. In many cases, older classical taxonomic synopses or a monographic treatment exist for these genera providing a reliable assessment of the species included.
