Monotypic; in montane forests of Yunnan, China. Oxelman & Lidén (1995) found Psammosilene to be sister to subfamily Caryophylloideae while Greenberg & Donoghue (2011) found it to be a sister to tribe Caryophylleae (Dianthus/Gypsophila/Saponaria, etc.).A
