This genus has been considered as a synonym to Fagopyrum based on pollen morphology (Hong 1988). However, recent molecular analyses did not place Eskemukerjea in Fagopyrum (Ohsako & al. 2001; Galasso & al. 2009; Sanchez & al. 2011). Since there are morphological characters that suggest its placement in Fagopyrum but there is no molecular evidence for that relationship, it has been left as incertae sedis by Sanchez & al. (2011).
