Notes
This is by far the most widespread species in the genus, found throughout the entire range. A number of African collections have been described as distinct species. Though the extremes are rather different from each other, there do not seem to be significant discontinuities between most of them and the tendency has been to sink them into the single species. However, the most recently described variety, var. pseudopaniculata, is so sharply defined that it deserves the status of a full species. At the same time, collections from the Middle East with winged mericarps are partially allopatric from the plants with spiny mericarps and it does seem appropriate to give formal recognition to these at varietal rank.
