Notes
Neea shows extensive morphological variation in habit, leaves, pubescence, inflorescences, flowers, and fruits (Burger 1983). Some authors (e.g. González 2007) consider it the taxonomically least understood group in the Neotropics. Neea seems to be the most species-rich genus within Nyctaginaceae; Douglas & Spellenberg (2010) mentioned that the genus has c. 80 species. However, the lack of a revision, along with the morphological variation and dioecy has generated many species names (about 150), while the actual number of species remains uncertain.
