Distribution (General)

Nigeria.

Diagnosis

Haec subspecies ab A. abbreviato subsp. abbreviato in-florescentia laterali pedunculo extra-axillari 1.0-2.1 cm longo insidente parte ramificante corymbiformi 4-5 cm longa, 6-7 cm lata atque fructu cum sepalorum limborum partibus apicalibus liberis patentibus triangularibusque distinguitur.

Habitat

In wet forests, swamp forests, and seasonal swamps at ca. 5-200 m.

Conservation

With distribution restricted to southern Nigeria where forest extent both inside and outside forest reserves continues to suffer extreme decline in quality of habitat due to agricultural encroachment: Critically Endangered. This new subspecies comprises a geographically disjunct population, or set of populations, that clearly belong to Ancistrocladus abbreviates but are morphologically distinct in a few features. Airy Shaw (1949) included these plants in A. abbreviates without comment, but they differ in their inflorescence position and arrangement. This new subspecies includes several collections (in particular Barter 1699) previously included by Scott-Elliot in A. barteri; see also the discussion under that species. When Airy Shaw (1950) lectotypified A. barteri he chose a different specimen, Scott-Elliot 4860, in spite of the eponymy given that species by Scott- Elliot in his original description.

Description

Leaves at branchlet apices relatively narrow, with L/W 2.5-3.6, very shortly and obtusely acuminate to rounded at apex. Inflorescencel ateral, paniculate; peduncle 1.0-2.1 cm long; branched portion 4-5 X 6-7 cm. Fruit with persistent sepal limbs spreading, triangular, with re volute margins.

Habitat

In wet forests, swamp forests, and seasonal swamps at ca. 5-200 m.

Phenology

Collected in flower in November and December, in fruit in December, February, and May.
