About 50 species, all but two found only in the New World. Little is known about relationships within Drymaria; Duke's (1962) preliminary revision in which he described, but did not validly publish, 17 series is the only recent, comprehensive study. Greenberg & Donoghue (2011) included all four sampled taxa and show a poorly resolved, possibly polyphyletic genus.A
