Introduction

A monogeneric family with c. 20 species, distributed mainly in southern Africa with a few species in Sudan, Ethiopia and southern Asia (Endress & Bittrich 1993). Traditionally, the single genus Limeum was placed in Molluginaceae. However, the position of the genus as an independent lineage and its distant placement from Molluginaceae has been well-supported by several molecular studies (Brockington & al. 2009; Schäferhoff & al. 2010; Christin & al. 2011). The family includes herbs and subshrubs characterised by pseudomonomerous two-chambered ovaries (Endress & Bittrich 1993).A,B,C,D,E
