Isolatocereus is recognized here as a monotypic genus. It belongs to Echinocereeae, based on molecular evidence (Hernández-Hernández & al. 2011) and because it shares the three characters of the group (tannins in the funicles, seeds with striated microrelief, triterpenes in the stem). It shares with Stenocereus the presence of silica bodies in the stem, however, phylogenetic studies carried out with cpDNA markers reveal that it is closer to Myrtillocactus and Escontria.A
