The specimens collected by Darwin during the 1831–1836 circumnavigation are identified, many for the first time. They are related to citations in his unpublished manuscript Plant Notes and Zoology Diary and his published Diary, to J. S. Henslow's unpublished manuscript list of Darwin's plants, and to other literature citations. A surprising number of Darwin's specimens are nomenclatural types. Included in the 1100 specimens found during the present study are 115 type collections. Darwin specimens are used herein to lectotypify 61 names, and a further 23 names are lectotypified by the specimens of others.
