Phylogenetics: Vargas-Luna & al. (2018) showed that Echinocactus grusonii was most closely related to Ferocactus and not to Echinocactus. Thus, the species clearly does not belong in Echinocactus. Those authors state that perhaps the close relationship to Ferocactus should be further explored with morphological data, so it possible that Kroenleinia grusonii is best circumscribed within Ferocactus (Vargas-Luna & al. 2018). However, for now given the phylogenetic topology, the recognition of Kroenleinia seems to be warranted. See also notes under Echinocactus.A
