About 15 species of herbs or small (sub)shrubs, native in tropical to warm temperate parts of North and South America, M. verticillata occasionally introduced in Europe, Africa and Asia, M. disticha restricted to India and Sri Lanka. Thulin & al. (2016) included nine Mollugo species in their phylogenetic study which showed that more work is needed with regard to the non-monophyletic M. brasiliensis and M. verticillata.A
