Schelle was clearly familiar with the works of Schumann, but apparently viewed this name as of garden origin and not as a name attributable to Schumann. Without referencing Schumann, Schelle’s description “hellgrün, gelbstachelig” was nearly verbatim of the description for the potential basionym C. grandiflorus var. haitiensis.A
