Climacoptera s.str. represents a monophyletic C₄ genus within Caroxyleae. The genus is distributed in central and southwest Asia and comprises only annual species. Highly contradictory species numbers, ranging from six to c. 42, are given (Akhani & al. 2007; Pratov 1986).
