Praecereus was found monophyletic, but at the same time nested in Cereus by Franco & al. (2017) based on plastid trnS-trnG. Hovever, the authors of that study did not make any statement as to whether Praecereus should be merged in Cereus, therefore Praecereus is still accepted here. See also note under Cereus.A,B
